Sindhudurg Fort is situated alongside the Arabian Ocean and presents a sight to behold. The fort was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1664. The fort has 52 bastions. The fort barrier of the entrance was made with such expertise that the outsiders wanting to enter the fort did not come to know of the existence. Its main gate is made of the hardest type of wood (Oomber). Spread over 48 acres, the fort has 30 feet (9.1 m) high and 12 feet (3.7 m) thick walls. To bear the force of the waves, Shivaji had constructed 3 mighty defence walls parallel to the foundation of the fort. The zigzag defence wall of the fort is between eight & ten feet in width. One of the most veritable facts about the fort is the presence of freshwater wells despite it being surrounded by the sea. Three of them are known as Dahi Bav (Curd Well), Dudh Bav (Milk Well) and Sakhar Bav (Sugar well).
